Born on the Ohio River in 1950, I moved to New Jersey with my family when I was eleven, knowing since five that I wanted to be an artist. Through the years on the East Coast, I worked consistently to acquire artistic skills. It was in 1981, when living in Baltimore that I felt a calling to The Southwest and made exploratory trips.
At that time, my first viewing of The Rio Grande Gorge from Hwy 68 south of Taos pierced my awareness and was deeply imprinted in my psyche as a surreal timeless emblem of a reality I was invited to enter. Waking visions stirred the pot of relocation after my return to Maryland, and an overall draw to the Southwest overwhelmed my sensibilities as well as my priorities, essentially transplanting me to New Mexico in 1982. However, while the specific sight and energy of The Gorge continued to beckon me, it wasn't until I had spent forty years wandering in the high desert of Northern New Mexico at large that I wound up creating residency in Taos.
Here, I continue to paint landscapes that inspire me, both imaginary and representative of the surrounding terrain. Yet, I am now also compelled to paint portraits of people. The idea of exalting the human spirit of each person is a driving force I eagerly accommodate. Hoping to convey the illuminating essence of humanity, while serving up landscapes for Nature's intrinsic grounding healing properties, is both a fulfilling purpose and pleasing aspiration.
