Gail Russell
Art to Wear, Photography
Gail Russell was a painter and print maker, before she picked up a camera. She studied at Pratt Institute, School of Visual Arts in NYC and Albright Knox School of Fine Art.
I approach photography as a dual practice, as both documentarian, and artist, essentially painting with light. For me, light sometimes transmits a spiritual message. I am inspired by how the state of mind might translate visually.
Russell has been named a Taos Living Master for her photography and has been honored as one of the Remarkable Women of Taos.
She has exhibited her work widely and continuously. Gail Russell's art embodies a positive, uplifting spirit, reflecting the beauty of nature, and spiritual awareness.
Recently she has developed a series of Gazelle Shawls and scarves-featuring her photographs on fine textiles, and has created - patented SallyGators Leg warmers and Kangaroo Scarves with pockets.
Her work is featured at Lyle's Creations in Taos, and she has a Studio/Gallery in El Prado where she exhibits her work including her Photographic book Spirit in Form winner of an Eric Hoffer Book Award.
