Maura Rae
Oil Painting, Photography, Ceramics
For many years, I've felt my life's purpose is to create beauty.
Capturing arrays of color, dancing light, and shaping forms in materials both soft and hard.
I was fortunate to be introduced to various mediums in high school including photography, ceramics, and sculpting stone. Building on that early foundation has come naturally. Along the way, I photographed my travels, constructed murals in my classrooms, took art classes and workshops to develop skills and keep the creative juices flowing.
As fate should have it, after a career as an educator, I returned to Taos where my journey in teaching began as an intern teacher at Taos Pueblo Day School. That experience was profound on many levels and the beauty of Taos stayed with me until many years later I was eventually called back to New Mexico.
There is no mistaking the stark beauty of the landscape, the play of light and shadows, the hues of color specific to the Southwest, and the abundant support for the arts themselves, that makes being an artist here special.
Since returning to Taos, I’ve learned how to dig and process native clay with a potter from Taos Pueblo and I show my photography at Sage Fine Art Gallery on the plaza. I’ve also added oil painting to my repertoire, and I’ve participated in several local exhibitions at Millicent Rogers Museum, Stables Gallery, and the TCA.
Creating beauty brings me joy and my greatest aspiration is to share that joy and beauty with others.
