CAT is the artistic persona of Christine Torrez, created as an homage to her parents, who affectionately called each other “Gato.” Based in the village of Arroyo Seco in Northern New Mexico, CAT creates narrative paintings that blend humor, storytelling, and social observation through a cast of anthropomorphic characters.

Working primarily in acrylic, her paintings draw inspiration from everyday life in Northern New Mexico—its small towns, local politics, tourism, traditions, and the colorful personalities that shape community life. Imaginative figures become stand-ins for the human experience, inviting viewers to laugh first and look deeper.
